Updates and Announcements

I have introduced a curving factor into the grades (one which boosts everyone's scores). Official grades for the course have been submitted. Have a great summer everyone, and thanks for making this a great class!!

Super-extra office hours the week of the Final! M 4-5, Tu 11-12, W 11-12, Thu 11-12+, and as usual, by appointment.

There is an error in Homework 5A's 3.4 #10. We will discuss this in class, and the problem will not be graded.

Midterm solutions are available here.

If you want to present a homework solution anonymously, you can give me a copy of the solution you would like presented, and I will show it to the class for critique, without revealing whose proof it is.

There will be a Midterm on Tuesday, July 13. A practice quiz, with solutions can be found here.

Homework 3 will be due on Thursday, July 8, so that we might get it back to you on Monday before the midterm.

There will be no class on Monday, July 5. Happy Independence Day!!

Introduction

This will be unlike your previous math classes. Contrary to common belief, Mathematics is not about calculations or "plugging and chugging." It is about rigor, logic, and creativity. Our goal in this class will be for you to learn what "proof" means, how to develop and construct your own proofs, and how to clearly convey a mathematical argument. This may seem difficult, and very foreign to you - especially at the beginning. But with much work and dedication, you will become adept at this method of thinking, and these skills will be of great value to you throughout the rest of your lives!

Grading

Participation: 10%

Present at least 2 proofs in class
Questions, discussion, and critique of others' solutions

Homework: 25%

Assigned every day
Due once a week (generally on Tuesdays)
Keep up! Lots of class time will be discussion/presentation of HW problems
Your HW will be graded on two different factors: Mathematical rigor, and clarity. For more details on HW expectations, see here.

Midterm: 25%

Tuesday, July 13

Final Exam: 40%

Thursday, July 29
Midterm and Final will have homework-type proofs, require you know know definitions, and will involve proof critiques

Homework

Homework will be assigned every day. Further, you will be expected to present homework solutions and proofs in class, so come prepared.
