  • Homework: Each week homework will be assigned based on the material covered that week. These will be collected at the beginning of class each friday (except exam weeks).
  • Gateway Exams: In addition to the midterm exams andhomeworks, you are expected to take and passtwo Gateway Exams (I and II) which test essential skills for the course and are administered by the Math Department. These exams are designed to encourage students to take responsibilityfor learning essential skills such as algebraic manipulation, differentiation, and integration. The idea is that you should havesufficient skills to ensure success in the subsequent segments of thecourse. The two exams cover algebraic manipulation anddifferentiation respectively. These are graded on a right-wrong basis, with nopartial credit available. Passing is based on getting all but one ortwo problems right (out of about 8 problems). The problems arestraightforward, and involve no story problems. You may repeat the tests as often as you like (within some time constraints) butmay not repeat a test on the same day. The tests are computer generatedfrom a large pool of questions, so it is very likely that no two tests arethe same, although a student taking the test often may see some of the samequestions. You should take these tests because they count for 5%(2.5% each) of your total grade for the course. To receive credit forthe first one you have to pass it BEFORE Saturday September 28. Afterthat, to receive credit for the second one you have to pass it BEFORESaturday, OCTOBER 26. These will be given between the following dates:
    Gateway I: Wednesday, September 4 - Friday, September 27
Gateway II: Monday, September 30 - Friday, October 25

Here are the locations and times for the Gateway exams:
    Monday: 8-10am C310 WH
    Tuesday: 8-10am C110 WH, 12:30-4:30pm C213 WH
    Wednesday: 8-10am C210 WH, 3-5 pm C314 WH
    Thursday: 8-10 am C307 WH, 2-5pm C109 WH
    Friday: 9am-12noon C208 WH, 2-5 pm C310 WH

Ending times are the times when the TEST WILL END and all tests will becollected, NOT the latest time to start the test. Be sure to record your section numbers on the signup sheets in the testing room. Otherwise your results may not be recorded properly.
These rooms have limited capacity, so there may be waiting time ifa large number of students show up at once. However, no student can takemore than 30 minutes on a test so the leading waits should not exceed thattime. Tests can be repeated until they are passed but you can take thetest only once per day.

    Rules of Examination:
Calculators and/or notes are not allowed during the test and nothing whichrequires a calculator is asked. Students are not allowed to resume a testif they have to leave the room.
Tests will be graded by the monitors as soon as possible after the test ishanded in. If the monitor is not otherwise busy, tests may be graded andreturned quickly. Students can always return later in the day, or the nextday to pick up their graded paper. Please note: a student who does notbelieve that a paper is graded correctly MUST NOT remove the paper from thepresence of the monitor. No appeals on the grading will be considered forpapers which the student has taken out of the testing room. Papers forwhich the grading is in dispute will be referred to a faculty supervisorfor a final judgment.
Finally, copies of a sample of the first Mth 132 gateway exam areavailable in A-313 WH.
  • Grading policy: Two lowest homework scores will be dropped. Homeworks are worth 100 points, three midterms are worth 90 points each and the cumulative (departmental) final is worth 200 points. Each Gateway exam is worth 15 points. So you will get a score put of 600 points at the end of the semester. Your grade will be determined from this score. After each mid-term exam I will announce the curve for THAT exam. This will help you to understand where you stand in class. However the final grade will be based on the curve which will be decided after the final exam.
  • Exam dates: The midterm exams will be held during class times.

Second midterm: Friday, October 18. Location: C108Wells Hall
