A major development in mathematical science in the 21st
century will be its novel applications to biomedical engineering and
biological science. Revolutionary opportunities have emerged for
mathematically driven advances in biomedical research. The Department
of Mathematics at Michigan
State University
has identified this interdisciplinary research as an area of focus. Our
interdisciplinary program emphasizes collaborations among mathematical biological
and engineering scientists. We feel strongly that it is time to
organize a conference to bring together researchers from mathematics,
engineering and biomedical sciences to exchange ideas and to foster
collaborations. This conference will be interesting to researchers of
all career stages and graduate students, who work or are interested in
the mathematical analysis of images and surfaces, and their applications
