Course: Math 20C
Title: Calculus for Science and Engineering
Credit Hours: 4 (2 credits if taken after Math 10C)
Prerequisite: Math 20B or equivalent
Catalog Description: Vector geometry, vector functions and their derivatives. Partial differentiation. Maxima and minima. Double integration.
Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, fifth edition, by James Stewart; published by Brooks/Cole; 2003
Subject Material: We shall cover parts of chapters 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the text.
Reading: Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment and it will be expected that you read the assigned material in advance of each lecture. You are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture.
Calculators: Graphing calculators (preferably a
TI-85 or TI-86) is
recommended. The calculator should be used as an aid in
learning concepts, not just as a
means of computation. Help with using TI graphing
calculators will be available in the
Calculus Lab. The
use of
calculators will not be permitted
during exams or quizzes.
Homework: Homework will be assigned on the
course homework page and should be
completed by the
indicated due date. Selected homework problems will be collected. In
addition, your homeworks will
be evaluated by your performance on periodic midterm exams.
You should make every effort to complete the homework assignments and
seek help with problems you have not been able to solve. A
Student Solutions Manual (available in the Bookstore) has complete
solutions for odd-numbered problems in the text.
Midterm Exams: There will be three exams, fifty minutes each. See the course calendar for the dates of the midterm exams. You will be allowed fifty (50) minutes to complete each exam. Each exam will have four or five problems. You may bring with you to the exams one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes; no other notes (or books) or calculators will be allowed. There will be no early or makeup exams.
Final Exam: The final examination will be held at the following date, time and place.
Grading: Your course grade will be determined by your cumulative average at the end of the term and will be based on the following scale:
