Here is some preliminary Information on how to get a Chinese visa:

1. Embassy and Consulates General of China in the US

It is very easy to get a visa to China if you apply for one from the US. No letter is actually necessary for a tourist visa. Information for visa to China can be found on the websites of Embassy and Consulates General of China in the US.

If you can not get to the Embassy or Consulates in person, you can mail your passport and necessary information to an agency that handles the visas. These agencies can get a visa for you for a small fee. Here are some of such agencies

You can probably find such agencies near the Consulate General that serves your area. You may want to apply for a visa that is valid for a whole year. The cost for a visa valid for 6 months is the same as a multiple entry visa valid for 12 months.
