FLAG CEREMONY TO PROPERLY DISPOSE OF THE AMERICAN FLAG

Written by Anson Roland

Scoutmaster of Troop 705

I. Explain why we are disposing of the American flag:

"The flag that I am holding is not suitable to represent our country. This flag is dirty and badly worn. It was given to Troop 316 to be disposed of properly."

II. Explain the ceremony to the people:

A. "Color guard prepare to dispose of the American flag. Will everyone please stand." (Color guard comes to center.)

B. "Color guard present the colors." (Flag is unfolded and held by the sides.)

C. "Color guard seperate the colors." (The blue field is cut away from the stripes.)

D. "Color guard dispose of the two pieces of cloth. Camp Scout Salute." (The two pieces are loosely gathered and put into the fire; first the blue field, then the stripes. The salute is held until the flag is totally burnt.)

E. "Two." (Dropping of hand salute.)

F. "Color guard return to ranks."

G. "Camp please be seated."
