TIPS FOR CONSTRUCTION
- The car should be built by the scout with minimal assistance from an adult.
- Adults should supervise and assist with power tools, saws, and knives.
- If your design calls for cutting away much of the block, use a saw first, then use a knife, followed by sanding.
- Paint your car before putting on wheels and axles. Avoid heavy paint where the wheels contact the car - the paint may slow your car.
- Lead sinkers (available at Meijer or other fine retail shops) are the cheapest weights available for your car. Hobby shops carry other weights.
- A post office will weigh your car for you if you ask nicely. Take painted car, wheels & axles, and weights. The closer your car is to 5 ounces, the faster it should be. Don't go over the weight limit. Drilling your car on race day can ruin your design.
- Remove burrs (rough edges) on nail axles with a small file or sand paper. The nail can be put in an electric drill to speed up the sanding process.
- Sand wheels lightly to remove burrs or seams. Careful - they break easily.
- Glue axles into the car to hold securely. Check wheel alignment and measurements first.
- Spare parts, accessories, stickers and designs are available at the Boy Scout Shop (on Michigan Ave. near the corner of Waverly Rd.), at many local hobby shops, and on the internet.
