A Brief Patriotic Opening (7:05 p.m.)
Mr. Goff comes forward.
Mr. Goff plays a patriotic song(s) on the harmonica.
Introduction of the Court (7:10 p.m.)
Mr. Goff takes his seat.
Michael comes forward and says:
"Please join me in welcoming the members of our Court of Honor, Troop Committee Chairman Cathy McCarthy, Scoutmaster John McCarthy, Assistant Scoutmaster Gary Cunningham, and Assistant Scoutmaster Joe Walsh."
Mrs. McCarthy, Dr. McCarthy, Mr. Cunningham, and Mr. Walsh take their places behind the table.
Mrs. McCarthy says:
"This Court of Honor is hereby convened to recognize the achievements of the Scouts of BSA Troop 272. Please be seated."
Mrs. McCarthy, Dr. McCarthy, and Mr. Walsh take their seats.
Presentation of the Troop Flag (7:15 p.m.)
Pastor Owens comes forward.
Pastor Owens says:
"Please stand and join me in prayer..."
Pastor Owens presents the Troop Flag to Troop 272.
Pastor Owens takes his seat.
Tenderfoot Ceremony (7:20 p.m.)
Mr. Cunningham comes forward facing Michael.
Mr. Cunningham says:
"Patrol Leader, who has earned the rank of Tenderfoot?"
Michael says:
"Sir, Xavier Weaver has earned this rank."
Michael takes his seat.
Xavier comes forward and stands next to Mr. Cunningham facing the audience.
Mr. Cunningham says:
"Xavier, tonight we are recognizing you for earning the rank of Tenderfoot, your first rank as a Boy Scout. By earning this rank, you have shown some abilities in camping and outdoor skills, some basic first aid techniques, and are learning about the patrol system. You have learned the Scout Oath, Law, motto and slogan and explained what they mean to you. Your final step was to participate in your first Scoutmaster conference and your first Board of Review where you have satisfied your Scoutmaster and the Board that you were indeed qualified and worthy of the rank of Tenderfoot Scout. This is the first step in a long journey towards Eagle, the highest rank in Scouting. Congratulations and best wishes as you continue on your journey towards Eagle."
Mr. Cunningham hands Xavier his Tenderfoot certificate, and gives him the Scouting handshake.
Xavier takes his seat.
Mr. Cunningham takes his seat.
Second Class Ceremony (7:30 p.m.)
Nathan comes forward.
Mr. Walsh comes forward facing Nathan.
Mr. Walsh says:
"Assistant Patrol Leader, who has earned the rank of Second Class Scout."
Nathan says:
"Sir, Tenderfoot Scouts Aaron and Michael have earned this rank."
Aaron and Michael come forward and stand next to Mr. Walsh facing the audience.
Nathan takes his seat.
Mr. Walsh says:
"Aaron and Michael, once before, when you became Tenderfoot Scouts, you stood before this Court. Time has passed since then. You have used this time well in pursuing Scout activities and knowledge. You have shown yourself worthy of the title of Second Class Scout. Congratulations on attaining your second rank in Scouting."
Mr. Walsh hands Second Class certificates to Aaron and Michael and gives them the Scouting handshake.
Aaron takes his seat.
Mr. Walsh takes his seat.
First Class Ceremony (7:40 p.m.)
Dr. McCarthy comes forward facing Michael.
Michael says:
"Will all First Class candidates please step forward for the First Class Ceremony."
Jacob and Nathan come forward and stand next to Michael.
Michael says:
"Scout Troop 272 of the Ojibwas District presents the following candidates, Jacob Butler and Nathan Truelove, for the awarding of the rank of First Class."
[Pause for effect.]
Michael takes his seat.
Dr. McCarthy says:
"In the days of chivalry, when a squire had earned the right to carry both sword and shield, it was customary for him to retire to the privacy of the chapel for a vigil of prayer. There, surrounded by his weapons, he communed thru the night with his Maker, praying that he might prove worthy of the honor of knighthood."
[Pause for effect.]
Dr. McCarthy says:
"Just as those knights of old valued their honor, so should the Scouts of today. As a First Class Scout, you will have the opportunity and the duty to demonstrate to all our code of honor, to which a true and mature Scout is forever bound."
[Pause for effect.]
Dr. McCarthy says:
"Are you ready to take this additional pledge, which will aid you in living as a true Scout? If so, signify by saying "I am"..."
Jacob and Nathan say:
"I am."
Dr. McCarthy says:
"Please repeat the Scout Oath, knowing that you are able and more worthy of living up to its highest challenge."
Dr. McCarthy gives the scout sign and waits for Jacob and Nathan to reply.
Jacob and Nathan repeat the Scout Oath:
"On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."
Dr. McCarthy says:
"I now present to you this certificate of First Class rank."
Dr. McCarthy hands out the certificates for First Class and shakes the hands of Jacob and Nathan.
Dr. McCarthy says:
"I congratulate you on having reached Scout maturity. You are now First Class Scouts. You may return to your seats."
Jacob, Nathan, and Dr. McCarthy take their seats.
Other Recognitions (7:50 p.m.)
Mrs. McCarthy comes forward facing the audience.
Mrs. McCarthy reviews other achievements which the Scouts have earned since our last Court of Honor on June 7, 2005.
  • Ethan recently completed the Personal Management merit badge.
  • Wal-Mart Fundraiser - Troop 272 collected $131.06 at the Wal-Mart Fundraiser on June 24, 2005.
  • Northwoods - The outing to Northwoods Summer Resident Camp on July 17-23, 2005, was quite successful. On this outing, the Scouts completed a number of merit badges. Jacob earned the Swimming, Fishing, Archery, and Shotgun Shooting merit badges. Michael earned the Mammal Study merit badge and partials on the Environmental Science, Astronomy, and Rifle Shooting merit badges. One afternoon, while the Scouts were at their merit badge classes, Dr. McCarthy and two adult leaders from Troop 585 installed fencing and a gate for storage for propane tanks at Northwoods.
  • Lake Michigan - The outing to Lake Michigan on August 19-21, 2005 was very successful. The Scouts completed a number of advancement requirements on this outing, which played a significant role in bringing the boys to their rank advancments which we have celebrated this evening.
  • C. Paul Letts Memorial Thank You Weekend On September 16-18, 2005, our troop enjoyed a weekend of fun activities at the expense of the Chief Okemos Council which invited all troops which participated in the Northwoods Summer Resident Camp to this event, in appreciation of their support of Scouting in the Chief Okemos Council, and to honor the memory of one of the Chief Okemos Council's finest Scouters, the late C. Paul Letts, who, shortly before he passed away, was honored for his years of active involvement in Scouting, as a Scout and a Scouter.
Closing Flag Ceremony (8:00 p.m.)
Mrs. McCarthy says:
"I want to congratulate all you Scouts for your accomplishments. We are proud to have each of you as a member of Troop 272."
"This Court of Honor is now adjourned. Please rise as the Scouts conduct the closing flag ceremony."
