Life Scout Ceremony (7:55 p.m.)
Dr. McCarthy comes forward and says:
"Will Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham and their son Chris please come forward for the Life Scout ceremony?"
After the Cunninghams come forward, Dr. McCarthy says:
"Chris Cunningham earned the rank of Life Scout in his former troop, Troop 43. We are very pleased to have his former Scoutmaster, Joe McIntosh, with us this evening to present Chris with the Life Scout badge. Will Mr. McIntosh please come forward?"
After Mr. McIntosh comes forward, Dr. McCarthy says:
"History will record the good works of two types of scouts, the great scouts of the past, through whom we received America, and the Boy Scouts of today, whose good works will help determine the type of heritage we leave to the future. The bold, rugged characters of George Washington, Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, and a host of others were gained in the stern robust life of the primitive outdoors. We cannot today perform the deeds of these old scouts in the same way that they performed them. But we can live the outdoor life they lived and we can model our lives along the solid lines laid down by them. In this way, the heritage we leave to those who follow will be a worthy reflection of the heritage we received from the great scouts of the past. In light of this heritage, do you as a Life Scout renew the pledge of service to your fellow men that you made as a Star Scout?"
Chris says:
"I do."
Dr. McCarthy says:
"This court of honor finds you fully qualified for the rank of Life Scout. The rank of Eagle Scout awaits you as you continue on the trail of Scouting. As Scoutmaster McIntosh presents you with the Life Scout badge, may the red heart of this badge be a constant reminder of the fine things you have received from Scouting, and of the fine things you carry in your heart as a pledge to Scouting and your fellow man."
Mr. McIntosh gives the Life Scout badge and certificate to Chris.
Dr. McCarthy says:
"This miniature Life Scout badge is for your mother, in recognition of her love, comradeship, encouragement and faith in you. Take it and pin it on her proudly."
Chris takes the miniature Life Scout badge and pins it on his mother.
Dr. McCarthy shakes Chris's hand and Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham's hands.
Chris faces Dr. McCarthy.
Dr. McCarthy salutes Chris and says:
"Attention! Scout Salute! Two! Dismissed."
Chris responds by standing at attention, and saluting Dr. McCarthy.
