Local Factorization of Birational Maps

Professor Dale Cutkosky
University of Missouri

A birational map of projective varieties is a polynomialmapping which is an isomorphism on an open set. It is conjectured thatsuch mappings can always be factored by blowing up and blowing down nonsingular subvarieties. We prove a conjecture of Abhyankarwhich shows that this factorization can always be done locally.
