ON THE CENTER OF MAXIMAL SUBGROUPS OF LOCALLY FINITE SIMPLEGROUPS OF ALTERNATING  TYPE

Abstract: Let G be a locally finite, simple group of alternatingtype and Z a subgroup of type (p,p). We show that there is a non-trivialelement z in Z with $C_G(z)\neq C_G(Z)$. In particular, the center of amaximal subgroup of G is locally cyclic.
