TEXT: Hungerford , Abstract Algebra: An Introduction, 3rd ed. We will first cover most of Chapters 1-6: see the Syllabus. I will supplement the text with notes, handouts, and web references on the Course Page.

Tentative Grade Scale: ≥90% = 4.0 , ≥85% = 3.5 , ≥ 80% = 3.0 , ≥75% = 2.5 , ≥70 = 2.0 , ≥ 60 = 1.0.
QUIZZES: First 5 minutes of every class, with questions based on homework problems. Missed quizzes will count as zero, but I will add a free 10% to your final quiz average to account for absences.
MIDTERM EXAM: Mon Oct 15 in class. No makeup will be given unless you make arrangements before the test.
FINAL EXAM: Tue Dec 11 at 3:00pm−5:00pm in Wells A-216 (lecture room) covering all the material of the course.

The key to success in this course is to solve all the problems on the HW. You should study for at least an hour for each lecture, mostly doing problems.
